Ray O’Brien was assigned to the role of CTO for IT at NASA’s Ames Research Center in February 2011. Prior to this assignment, he was the project manager for NASA’s Nebula Cloud Computing Initiative. During his term as project manager, Nebula’s Nova compute controller technology was chosen as one of the two foundational components of OpenStack – the Open Source Cloud Computing Initiative. Since its formation in July of 2010, OpenStack has become one of the world’s fastest growing community software development projects.
O’Brien joined NASA Ames Research Center in 1982 working as a contract programmer-analyst and later as a technology support specialist. In 1989, he became a NASA employee and has since served in many positions, including Project Manager, IT Security Branch Chief, IT Customer Service Branch Chief, IT Operations Division Chief, and Acting Deputy CIO. During his career at NASA Ames, O’Brien has been responsible for supporting and implementing a wide-range of information technologies and services.
Ray holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of San Francisco and lives in Northern California with his wife and their three children. In his free time he enjoys photography and is an avid fisherman.
